Friday Feature: Chie Fukami

As soon as you see Chie Fukami’s toy piano, you have a good idea of what you’re getting into. And lest you think it’s just an aesthetic choice, rest assured this style permeates her music.

She plays said toy piano, and supplements it with accordion, keys, a drum machine, and layers of her own voice. Her talents have been employed for collaborations, video game scores, and works of her own composition.

irony, irony is one such song, collecting these sensibilities while Chie sings cheerful verses about love, richly colored and dense with metaphors. She sings to chimneys about smoke, mathematics, and ambiguous indications of love, with the titular irony and toy piano playing up the kitschy style. It’s a charming production, all presented with her strong sense of whimsy.
